Hello Bookworms, Keep reading for my review of We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal... Synopsis (Goodreads):
People lived because she killed. People died because he lived. Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the king. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be. War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the king on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine. Set in a richly detailed world inspired by ancient Arabia, We Hunt the Flame is a gripping debut of discovery, conquering fear, and taking identity into your own hands. What I liked: - I really loved the dual, first person narration! - I loved the theme of darkness throughout and I thought the idea and execution of darkness personified was brilliant. - I loved each minor character and I appreciated the evolving relationships within the Zumra. - I liked the plot twists, particularly the one which expanded the relationship between Nasir and Altair! - THE WORLD- Beautiful! Wonderful! Magical! What I didn't like: - The first 200 pages were SLOW. Though I liked the initial world-building and the added character depth not a ton happened in those first pages and I personally like a more action-packed beginning. - The romance :( Though I loved both main characters individually, I wasn't entirely invested in their blooming relationship. Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed diving into this magnificent world and the character development was stellar! Though the first half of the book was slow, the rest of the book was packed with exciting events and plot twists. I will be picking up We Free the Stars when it is released in early 2021. OVERALL RATNG: 🌟🌟🌟🌟 (four stars) As always, much love. XO - B
